Mr.
Weiskopf was also guest conductor of The Akron, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit,
Florida (Orlando) and Houston Symphonies, and made his New York Philharmonic
debut on the podium at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center.
In
1973 he was elected to the Board of Trustees of The Musical Arts Association
which sponsors The Cleveland Orchestra and, from 1975 to 1979 he was chairman
of the WCLV Marathons for the benefit of The Cleveland Orchestra.
For
23 years as conductor and music director, Mr. Weiskopf gave freely of his
time, talent, resources and energy. Many professional musicians performed
with the orchestra as section leaders or soloists because of their high
regard for Robert Weiskopf.
Together
with his wife, the internationally famous pianist, Eunice Podis, he has
been very active in most of the important facets of the Cleveland music
scene. In 1970 he conducted The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center,
when Miss Podis appeared as soloist.
Robert
C. Weiskopf (1919 - 1979) was musical director of the Suburban Symphony Orchestra
in Beachwood, Ohio from 1956 to 1979. He played the cello while attending
Cleveland Heights High School and later studied cello and orchestra conducting
at the Eastman School of Music from which he graduated with a Bachelor of
Music degree. In 1940 he was one of the few promising musicians chosen to
study conducting with Serge Koussevitzky at Tanglewood. During the war years,
he served as assistant -conductor of the Manila Symphony (Philippine Islands).
In 1946 he entered the business world and in 1960 became president of Cleveland
Cotton Products, a nationally-known firm.
