BERNHARD GOLDSCHMIDT 1925 - 1994
Bernhard Goldschmidt served as coach and concertmaster of the Suburban Symphony Orchestra from 1963 to 1979.
Born in Berlin, Bernhard Goldschmidt began playing violin at the age of five and was later a student at the Berlin Conservatory. In 1939, he immigrated with his parents to Shanghai, where he studied with Alfred Wittenberg, a master pupil of Joseph Joachim. He also studied at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Prior to joining The Cleveland Orchestra, he served in the United States Air Force and played in the Houston Symphony.
He joined The Cleveland Orchestra in 1958 and was appointed principal second violinist by George Szell in 1964 He appeared as soloist with the Orchestra under George Szell, Erich Leinsdorf, Mathias Baumert and Lorin Maazel. In addition, he was a faculty member for 20 years at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He also served on the faculty of Kent/Blossom Music from its inception in 1968, became head of its string department in1971. As an educator, he was highly regarded as a teacher of violin and of orchestral and chamber music repertoire.
